(noun) A True Believer is a dupe or a minion who believes that the psychopath is exactly what they present themselves to be. The purpose of the True Believer is to inspire others to believe by their own fervent belief. They lend their credulousness to a larger audience.
If the True Believer is an innocent dupe, he may actually believe the entire fabricated story without any doubt. Often the dupe is so enthralled with the psychopath, that he can’t imagine any other possibility. After all, the psychopath wouldn’t lie. Right?
If the True Believer is a minion, then it’s very likely that he knows the psychopath is pulling a con and that it is his job to testify to the veracity of the fabricated story. The minion is also likely enthralled by the psychopath but he is also experiencing the thrill of pulling off a con. He knows that the psychopath is lying to everyone else, but he believes that the psychopath wouldn’t lie — to him. Right?
The True Believer is one of the most important props of the psychopath, therefore it’s necessary to present them with as many additional props to inspire their belief. Toward this end, the True Believer often becomes the spouse, significant other, or best friend of the psychopath. He could be an investor or a mentor. It will always be someone who is invested in their belief in the psychopath. Very often, the True Believer feels he has found a soul mate, someone of like mind, a friend like no other. This increases the fervor of their belief in the psychopath.
The True Believer doesn’t realize that they are in a precarious position with the psychopath. If they ever lose their faith, they will be punished more severely than someone who never believed at all. This is because nobody is allowed to leave the game – ever, since that would negate the psychopath’s reality, which consists solely of the game.
The psychopath also realizes that there is nobody more dangerous to him than a reformed True Believer. He knows that the fervor with which they believed in the psychopath could be transferred toward a fervor to unveil the psychopath.« Back to Glossary Index
